Richard Harold Callen

Richard (Dick) Harold Callen, of Kalamazoo passed away early Thursday morning January 28th with his family by his side. He was born in Grand Rapids Michigan on November 9, 1929. The son of Harold and Ina (Unseld) Callen. While employed at Bell telephone Dick married the love of his life, LaVona Joyce Hughey on July 1, 1950. Soon after they married, he began working for The Upjohn Company, where he retired from in 1984. Retirement didn’t stop Dick from keeping busy. He spent countless hours in his basement creating many wooden projects like bowls and trees, spindles for pianos, height boards for pediatrics, and anything his grandkids would draw or ask for. Besides his wood working talents, he enjoyed spending time in the kitchen baking bread, cinnamon rolls, and making the best caramel corn you ever tasted. For many years they wintered in Cocoa Beach Florida and enjoyed digging for shells and entertaining friends. Fridays were a special time when the family would come together for dinner and to enjoy each other’s company. Dick leaves behind his wife, LaVona (Bonnie) of 70 years; three children: Richard Jr. (Sandy), Dave (Sonia), and Kim (John Hyden); three grandchildren: Austin, Logan, and Taylor; brother: Jerry; and sister Diane. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dick’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan.
