Andrew Joseph Harma, Sr., of Delton passed away on September 25, 2024, at the age of 82. He was born on March 28, 1942, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, and was the son of Wayne and Mary (Tavern) Harma. Andy was not only known for his professional achievements but also cherished for his vibrant personality and the countless memories he created with loved ones.
A graduate of Sault Ste. Marie High School’s Class of 1961, Andy was an active participant in multiple sports including football, but his passion was hockey where he played Junior A hockey for the Soo Indians.
His career began as a test driver at the Milford Proving Grounds for Pontiac Motors, a position that exemplified his love for cars. In the late 1960s, he made the move to Kalamazoo to join his brother-in-law in his plumbing business. Driven by determination and an entrepreneurial spirit, he eventually established A.J. Harma Plumbing, where he provided services for over 26 years. Afterward, he dedicated more than 15 years of his professional life to the State Hospital before officially retiring. On August 26, 2008, he married Pamela Reynolds.
He loved being outdoors, and especially loved deer hunting. He could not wait for the annual deer hunting trips in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, where he enjoyed every moment spent at deer camp. He loved when his grandson was able to join the group. Andy was known for his energy, fun, and hardworking nature—punctuality was one of his hallmarks, often arriving 20 minutes early to commitments.
His energetic personality drew people in, and those who knew him will fondly remember his creative crafts that he would make. Above all things, he was proudest of his family and enjoyed gatherings. And his family loved his famous New Year's Spaghetti and Meatballs, his grandkids helping prepare the meal. There was always a sauna involved that day with rolling in the snow if possible.
He loved playing cribbage, usually 2-4 games a day. Also enjoyed Mexican Train dominoes with friends, doing paint by number pictures and fishing while in Florida.
His commitment to his community was reflected in his proud role as the current Worshipful Master for the Hickory Corners Masonic Lodge #345 and as an Honorary Member of the Bedford Masonic Lodge. Andy would have celebrated 50 years of being a Mason in 2025. He recently rejoined the Saladin Shriner's organization.
As family and friends gather to celebrate this remarkable life, they will carry forward the legacy of joy he instilled within them. His impact spans not only through his professional endeavors but also through his personal connections that enriched the lives of many. Andy will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Pamela; two sons: A.J (Lysanne) Harma, of Richland; Matt (Brenda) Harma, of Richland; four grandchildren: Kathryne, Maggie, Andrew, and Molly. He is also survived by his two siblings: Angela Vacca, of FL and Sam (Annette) Harma of FL; several nieces and nephews; and his first wife Marcia James.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Wayne and Mary Harma; his aunt Kathryne Harma and many other aunts and uncles.
