Arthur James Bennett, a beloved resident of Battle Creek, MI, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on February 13, 2024. Born on April 21, 1931, in Battle Creek to Albert and Iris (Stein) Bennett, Arthur's journey was one defined by passion, dedication, and love.
Arthur was united in marriage to his beloved wife, Ellen, who preceded him in death in 2020. Together, they navigated the joys and challenges of life, raising four children: Michael, Laurie, Scott, and Lon Bennett. He was also cherished by his daughters-in-law, Carol and Sharon Bennett, son-in-law Keith Senne, and sister-in-law Shar Atwood. Though Arthur faced the sorrow of losing his son Michael in 1983 and grandson Ryan Doty in 2021, his love for his family remained unwavering. He took immense pride in his grandchildren, Christy Tenney and Kyle Bennett, as well as his seven great-grandchildren.
Arthur was a man of many talents and pursuits. Throughout his life, he was self-employed, demonstrating a strong work ethic and unwavering determination to provide for his family. Racing held a special place in Arthur's heart, and he devoted countless weekends to traveling to New York to compete in races, ensuring the well-being of his loved ones. He was renowned for his expertise in building street rods and racing boats, his daughter Laurie fondly recalling his remarkable ability to reassemble a car without any instructions. Arthur was a true pioneer of the super modifieds, leaving an indelible mark on the racing community.
In addition to his dedication to his family and his passion for racing, Arthur proudly served in the Navy reserves for eight years, embodying a spirit of patriotism and service to his country.
A memorial to celebrate Arthur's life will be held in April of 2024, with the exact date and time yet to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Arthur's memory to the ASPCA, reflecting his deep love and compassion for animals.
Arthur James Bennett will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. May his legacy of love, resilience, and passion for life continue to inspire us all.
