Arthur E. Thompson

Arthur "Art" Edward Thompson, 79, of Portage, MI, passed away on October 25, 2026. Born in Syracuse, NY, he made his home in Michigan after earning a master's degree in accounting from the State University of New York at Binghamton.

Art and his beloved wife, Kathleen, shared nearly 43 years of marriage. She preceded him in death in 2025. He devoted himself to providing for his family and took satisfaction in practical projects around the house. Firmly believing in being useful and self-reliant, he completed several electrical courses at Kalamazoo Valley Community College so he could rewire his house to code. He took pride in passing all city inspections and in befriending the inspector during the long process.

He found satisfaction in building functional furniture, tending an annual vegetable garden, and helping his neighbors. In retirement he joined the Paw Paw Conservation Club, where he assisted with numerous projects and enjoyed the outdoors.

He is survived by 3 children, Cheryl Thompson of Portage, MI; Lynn Thompson (Akashdeep Ray) of Washington, DC; and Joel Thompson of Ferndale, MI; his sister, Linda Thompson of Baldwinsville, NY; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A private memorial gathering will be held for family and friends.
