Bertha May "Midge" (Mears) Engelman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on Friday, May 10, 2024, in Portage, MI, at the age of 91. Born in Fulton, MI, she was the daughter of James and Neta (Smith) Mears.
Midge was united in marriage to her teenage love, Albert "Skip" Engelman, on July 29, 1950. Their love story spanned seventy years of marriage and seventy-five years of companionship, filled with shared joys and cherished memories.
As a devoted homemaker, Midge dedicated herself to caring for her children and grandchildren. She was known for her exceptional sewing skills, serving as the family's mender of clothes and master of stain removal. Her talent extended to crafting her children's Halloween costumes, adding her special touch of creativity and love.
Midge's culinary prowess was legendary among her family and friends. She delighted in preparing extravagant holiday feasts, complete with an array of dishes and up to eight different pies, showcasing her passion for cooking and nurturing her loved ones.
Beyond her culinary talents, Midge's warm and welcoming nature endeared her to all who knew her. Her home was a sanctuary of hospitality, where guests were always greeted with open arms, encouraged to kick off their shoes, and indulge in her comforting treats and endless cups of coffee.
Those closest to Midge will fondly remember her unwavering spirit and strong will. She was never one to shy away from voicing her opinions, standing firm in her convictions with a determination that inspired respect and admiration.
In her leisure time, Midge found joy in simple pleasures, often engaging in games and puzzles with her grandchildren. Whether it was a lively game of Skip-Bo or a relaxing afternoon spent solving puzzles, she cherished these moments of connection and laughter with her beloved family.
Midge leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and resilience that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for her nurturing spirit, her unwavering strength, and the countless ways she enriched the lives of those around her.
Left to cherish Midge's loving memory are her children, James (Crystal) Engelman, Esta (Bobby) Walls, Albert (Lois) Engelman Jr., and Beth Yancer; 9 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; and lots and lots of extras.
Midge is preceded in her passing by her husband of seventy years: Albert "Skip"Engelman; her parents, eight siblings, grandchildren: Michael Gruizenga, great grandchild: Hope Glidden, a son in law, and a daughter in law.
In accordance with the family's wishes a time for visiting will be held on Monday, May 13, 2024 from 11:00 am until the time of service 1:00 pm at Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, 409 S. Main St., Vicksburg, MI 49097. Midge will be laid to rest with her husband during a graveside service at Leonidas Cemetery.
Memorials made in Midge's memory may be directed to Elara Caring Hospice. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
