Betty Lou Martin

Listen to Obituary

Betty Lou Martin, of Portage, Michigan, passed away surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on June 23, 1938, in Sparta, Michigan.

Just one week after graduating from high school, Betty Lou married the love of her life, Hiram Clarke Martin, on June 16, 1956 in Whitehall, MI, later relocating to Portage, MI. Together, they shared 26 years of marriage filled with love, companionship, and countless memories.

Betty Lou began her working life alongside her husband at Walter Flood Engineering Co., where they built a successful business. Later, she continued her career as the Director of Finance for a healthcare agency before eventually retiring.

Betty Lou and Hiram shared a love of traveling and enjoyed making memories together. One of the stories her family fondly remembered was a deep-sea fishing trip in Nassau. While the men returned without much to show for their efforts, Betty Lou managed to catch a large wahoo, giving her a story she could proudly tell for years to come.

Betty Lou had many interests that brought her joy throughout her life. She loved crafting, reading, spending time outdoors, socializing, and especially dogs. She also treasured every opportunity to spoil her grandchildren. Her love extended well beyond her immediate family, and she became a second mom to many. To countless children, she was affectionately known simply as "Grandma Betty."

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hiram Clarke Martin; her son, Jay Clarke Martin; and her daughter, Linda Marie Beuchat.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her daughters, Cheryl (John) Miles, Tamra Diamond, and Vickie (Mike) Ward; her grandchildren, Jay, Jerry, Robert, Ashley, Jesse, Jacqui, Chelsea, Maddison, and Nicholas; her 14 great-grandchildren; and her three beloved grand pups, Jack, Thor, and Lexi.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Betty Lou's memory be directed to the Western Michigan University Therapy Dog Clinic, c/o Certified Therapy Dog Clinic Gift Fund.

Betty Lou will be remembered for her loving heart, her generous spirit, and the special place she held in the lives of so many. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose warmth and love made her "Grandma Betty" to far more people than those she could call family.

In accordance with the family's wishes Betty Lou will be laid to rest with Hiram at Central Portage Cemetery during a private committal service.
