Charles Wesley Ford

FORD, Charles Wesley Died on February 11, 2011 at Rose Arbor Hospice Care of SW Michigan. Born in Akron, Ohio, he was the son of Charles Atly and Ann (Zachadnyk) Ford. Chuck worked at the Upjohn, Pharmacia and Pfizer Pharmaceutical companies as a microbiologist and immunologist and was passionate about discovering and researching drugs that would improve the quality of life for people. He was instrumental in the discovery and development of Zyvox (a lifesaving new class of antibiotics) which was his proudest work achievement. Outside of work, Chuck truly enjoyed spending time with his wife, sons and friends. He was a master at barbequing and liked to gather people together. He enjoyed fishing, photography, reading, sharing good food and a glass of fine whiskey with friends. Those fortunate to have known him, his friends and colleagues, shall remember Chuck as a wonderful human being, marvelous father, loving husband, excellent scientist and great friend. Chuck was married to Sandra Robbins on August 17, 1968. In addition to Sandy, surviving members of the family include son, Mark Weller (Tammy and Matt), son, Matthew Ford (Stephanie); son, Logan Ford who preceded Chuck in death; step-mother, Muriel Ford; half-sister, Kathy (Alan) Scalingi; nephews, Adam and Andrew Scalingi; and half-brother, John Ford. Also, surviving are long time family friends, Marge Goldsmith; his best friend, Robert Yancey along with a multitude of good friends. Chuck had cancer the last twelve years of his life. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Michigan Cancer Center or Rose Arbor Hospice of SW Michigan. A barbeque to celebrate Chuck's life is scheduled for February 20, 2011 at the Parkview Hills Club House on Greenleaf Circle between 2:00 and 6:00 PM.
