Claudia Lea Sabin, age 74, of Portage, Michigan, passed away on May 19, 2026. She was born on May 29, 1951, in Albion, Michigan, the daughter of Milford and Norma (Hardwick) Sabin.

Claudia graduated from Vicksburg High School in 1968. Born deaf, she became deeply involved in the deaf community throughout Michigan and formed countless lifelong friendships through the organizations, events, and activities she loved.

Softball was one of Claudia's greatest passions and a cherished family tradition. She played in numerous deaf softball tournaments and was once featured in The Grand Rapids Press after hitting three home runs in a single game during a Grand Rapids Deaf Tournament. Through softball, she met her husband, Lloyd Jackson. Though the two later separated, they remained close friends throughout the remainder of her life.

Claudia had a remarkable gift for making connections and never seemed to meet a stranger. Whether close to home or even while visiting Disney World in Florida, she always managed to run into someone she knew. Her outgoing personality, infectious laughter, and positive spirit brought joy to everyone around her.

She was talented in many creative hobbies and especially enjoyed leathercrafting, making her own visors, belts, keychains, wallets, and other handmade items. She also enjoyed wood burning, puzzles, and a variety of crafts.

Claudia took pride in her ability to read lips and loved teaching others sign language. She even taught members of the nursing staff at her care facility, as well as students from Western Michigan University who visited her weekly. Her patience, warmth, and willingness to teach left a lasting impression on many.

Faith was an important part of Claudia's life, and she remained actively involved with her church throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Mark and Tim Sabin; her sister-in-law, Karen Sabin; and her nephew, Jeremy Sabin.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her brother, Scott (Cathy) Sabin; her nieces and nephews, Jenni (Art) Roberts, Justin (Hope) Sabin, Jessica (Matt) Balkema, and Cameron Sabin; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and countless lifelong friends.

In accordance with the family's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at her church on a later date.

Claudia will be remembered for her joyful spirit, her unwavering faith, and the kindness and laughter she so freely shared with everyone fortunate enough to know her.
