David O. Baird

David O. Baird, of Fulton, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026, at the age of 89. David was born on August 28, 1936, in Battle Creek. He was the son of David S. and Grace (Edwards) Baird. His was a life that exemplified quiet strength, steadfast devotion, and a lasting impact upon all those who were privileged to know him.

David spent his early years in rural Battle Creek, Michigan, before his family moved to Fulton. From the beginning, the values of hard work and perseverance were instilled in him, shaped by life on the farm and the strong bonds of family. He continued his education at Vicksburg High School, graduating from there after the move, and it was within those halls that something remarkable began, a friendship with Ted Holt. It was this friendship which led to an introduction to Ted’s sister, Marilyn. It wasn’t long before David and Marilyn began dating, discovering in each other true companionship and a shared vision for their future.

On April 22, 1955, David married Marilyn Holt in a ceremony at the Fulton Congregational Church. Their union was one of deep mutual respect and unwavering love, ultimately spanning an extraordinary 65 years. Together, they built a great life, raising four children and sharing all of life’s joys and challenges as a devoted team.

David’s strong work ethic carried him into the workforce, beginning much like many Battle Creek natives at Kellogg Cereal. After marriage, he and Marilyn settled for many years in Arizona, where David worked for Southwest Bell, affectionately known as “Ma Bell”, until his retirement. They also lived for about 10 years in Montana. Their journey came full circle when they returned to Michigan to maintain their farm in Fulton. Farming was not just an occupation for David; it was his way of life, and he remained deeply connected to the land.

His commitment to family and his practical abilities shone through in every aspect of his life. Known as the family’s “Mr. Fix-It,” David could repair nearly anything, be it a car, a piece of farm equipment, or even constructing a home with his own hands. His resourcefulness and determination became the backbone of family life, and his quiet pride, humility, and skill left an enduring legacy.

Those who knew David recall a man who was strong-willed, private, and respectful. Earning his respect was no small feat, and it was a treasure to be valued and guarded. Throughout their years in Michigan, David and Marilyn were members of Prairie Baptist Church, where they found spiritual community and support.

David’s story is one of devotion, to family, to hard work, and to a life well lived. His marriage to Marilyn was among his proudest accomplishments, and together they created a legacy of love, perseverance, and strength for their family.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn in 2020; Parents: David and Grace Baird; two brothers: Fred Baird in 1988 and William Baird in 2012.

He is survived by his four children: Stephen (Mary) Baird, of Coopersville; Joan (Bob) Huffman, of NM; Thomas Baird, of FL; and Ellen (Mike) Ashbee, of MO; eight grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.

Burial of David's ashes will take place at a later date.
