David Dwight Cate of Constantine, MI passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2023, at the age of 67. He was born in Kalamazoo, MI on October 13, 1955, the son of Richard Cate and Sally Church.
David attended Comstock High School and later received his diploma through Big Bend Community College. At the age of eighteen, he joined the United States Armed Forces in 1976 and in 1986 he moved to the Army Reserves. After being honorably discharged he worked as a Maintenance Technician for the remainder of his career and attended Glen Oak Community College in Centreville to further his education. In his retirement he spent his time assisting with the Ft. Custer Honor Guard and stocking at Meijer.
David will be fondly remembered for his service in the Army, Army Reserves, and Honor Guard. He loved watching the Detroit Lions, Michigan Wolverines, and Red Wings. Children and grandchildren will remember his silly songs that would get stuck in your head and his easy smile.
Left to cherish David’s loving memory are his children: Melissa (Angel) Cate, Cristy Cate, and Christopher Hall and their families; his mother: Sally Nichols; siblings: Michael (Wendy) Cate, Barbara (Sam) Accorsa, Robin (Tony) Hillman, and Janice (Tim) Decker; his longtime companion: Rose Born and her family; and many friends.
In accordance with the family’s wishes cremation has taken place and a celebration of David’s life will be held at Avink, McCowen & Secord, 5975 Lovers Ln, Portage, MI 49002, on Thursday, February 9, 2023, with a time for visiting beginning at 12:00 noon until the time of service at 1:00 p.m. Following the service David will be laid to rest at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Following the committal service friends and family are invited to a “dutch dinner” at Denny’s Diner, 4785 Beckley Road, Battle Creek, MI 49015.
Memorials made in David’s memory may be directed to Ft. Custer National Cemetery. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
