It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Anthony Hoffmaster, born on November 5, 1991, in Plainwell, Michigan. David was taken from us too soon, but his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
David was a dedicated firefighter, a passion he embraced from a young age. Starting as a cadet at just 15, he volunteered his time in Moline and Wayland. His uncle Mike, a member of the Plainwell Fire Department, served as both a mentor and inspiration. David’s commitment to public service was only matched by his love for his two sons, Elijah and Lincoln, who were the lights of his life.
Growing up in Wayland, Michigan, David was known for his strong-willed, caring, and social nature. He was the kind of person who would lend a hand to anyone in need, and his warmth touched the lives of many. Whether he was hunting, fishing, motorcycling, boating, or simply enjoying days at the beach, David embraced life with a joyful spirit and a contagious smile. He cherished every moment spent camping with family and friends, creating memories that will be treasured forever.
David is survived by his loving father, Shawn Hoffmaster, and stepmother Theresa Hoffmaster; his mother, Kathleen Bruce; his fiancé Ashley Schoppe; his sisters: Liz (Arianna) Hoffmaster and Tori (Monty) Emmons. He is also survived by his aunts: Shanna Ruffner and Joyce (Marc) Hunter; and his adoring grandparents, Carol Ruffner and Ralph (Liz) Karcher; cousins: Trenton Ruffner, Brady Ruffner, Nathan Bruce, Max Hunter and Maya Hunter. He will be remembered fondly by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and countless friends. David was preceded in death by his stepfather Robert Bailey and his grandparents: Bob Bruce, Pat Clarke, and George Ruffner.
David served on several fire department and and was promoted to captain at Spring Lake FD in North Carolina. He developed many close relationships and leaves behind his chosen fire family; the brothers and sisters at all of the fire stations where he served. He loved you all and appreciated the friendships and support that you gave him.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate David’s life and share in loving remembrances. A memorial gathering will be held at the Plainwell Funeral Home on October 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the same location.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in David’s honor to a local fire department or a charity that supports youth programs, as he firmly believed in giving back to the community.
Though David may no longer be with us in body, his legacy of love, service, and adventure will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
While visiting David’s webpage at www.amsfuneralhomes.com please sign the guestbook and/or share a memory with the family.
