Donald Henry Hiskes, 93, of Vicksburg, Michigan, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 8, 2026. He was born on March 11, 1933, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John and Alice (Boonstra) Hiskes.
Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, a time of service he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
A skilled and dedicated carpenter, Don had a lifelong passion for building. He began working alongside his father constructing homes in Chicago and continued his craft for many years. His work lives on in the homes he helped create, including the master suite he built on his daughter's home.
In 2001, Don moved from Illinois to Vicksburg, where he embraced the quiet joys of country life. He especially enjoyed caring for his chickens and goats, finding peace and satisfaction in the simple rhythms of rural living.
Don had a deep appreciation for classic automobiles and rarely missed the Annual Vicksburg Car Show. He was a member of the Gilmore Car Museum, where he enjoyed sharing in the history and beauty of vintage cars. In his younger years, he also held a pilot's license and found great joy in flying small planes. His love of aviation continued through his membership with the Kalamazoo Air Zoo.
He is survived by his loving children: Scott (Sheryl) Hiskes, Heidi (Kenneth) Dykstra, and Mark (Julie) Hiskes; his cherished grandchildren: Jason Swaagman, Justine (Brandon) Budz, Joel (Amanda) Hiskes, Adam (Jessica) Dykstra, David (Mariah) Dykstra, Jamilyn Hiskes, and Brian Hiskes; as well as nine great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Ruth; his parents; his grandson, Benjamin Dykstra; and his brother, Dr. John Hiskes.
Interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery at a later date.
