Listen to Obituary

Donald L. Mello, of Middleville, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the age of 94.

Don was born on July 26, 1931, in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Manuel and Mary (Tavares) Mello. Throughout his long and well-lived life, Don carried with him a quick smile and an easy warmth that made everyone feel welcome.

Don proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was stationed at Fort Custer and was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant, a reflection of his dedication, leadership, and strong work ethic-qualities he carried throughout his life.

On August 12, 1950, Don married his first wife, Lucille Sillars. Together they shared many years of love and family until Lucille's passing in 1998. Don later found love again and married Ruth Winkle on June 22, 2017. Ruth survives him and was a cherished companion in his later years.

A true man of many talents, Don was known as a jack-of-all-trades. He especially enjoyed woodworking and was often found building or fixing projects for family and friends. Don took great pleasure in life's simple joys-spending time with his family, going for drives with his wife, sitting peacefully by the ocean, or riding his bicycle.

Don spent his working years as a dedicated truck driver for Bradford White and Holland Motor Express in Kalamazoo, retiring after many years of dependable service. His childhood and life took him between Fall River, Massachusetts; Kalamazoo and Middleville, Michigan; and Daytona Beach, Florida-places that shaped his character and memories.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Mello; his children, Lawrence Mello, Theresa Mello, David (Connie) Mello, and Karen (Ross) Barber; Raymond (Jen) Mello and his stepsons, Joel Appel; and Matthew (Jessica) Appel. He is also survived by many cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Mary Mello; his sisters, Veronica Fisher and Helena Kennedy; his first wife, Lucille Mello; and his stepson, Brian Appel.

Don will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity or organization in Don's memory. Memorial service details will be announced at a later date.
