Dorothy Marlatt

Dorothy M. Marlatt, age 95, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, May 22, 2025. Born on February 11, 1930, in Milwaukee, WI, she was the daughter of William & Susana (Woyak) Brown.

When Dorothy was young, her father set up ammunitions factories for the war, so they lived in a camper for several years. As an adult, she was a lifelong resident of the Kalamazoo area. Every Thursday, Dorothy would host a group of 7 seniors at her house for lunch and every Wednesday evening they would go to Presbyterian Church in downtown Kalamazoo for dinner. Dorothy was a member of the 7th Day Adventist Church.

Dorothy was married to George Higgins for 26 years before they divorced. Later she married Bill Rethard and they were together for 8 years before he passed away. Dorothy married Harry Marlatt, and they were together 17 years before he died in an accident.

Dorothy's legacy lives on through her two sons: George Higgins and Fredrick Higgins; her daughters in Law: Helen Higgins and Claire Higgins; her siblings: Jim and Esther; 10 grandchildren as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews who will remember her with affection and gratitude. A special thanks goes out to Helen’s family: Tammy (Gary) Stults, Pamula (Rod) Laszlo, Candy (Dan) Hayes, Tony and his daughter Izzy Kuiper for their care and support.

Visit with family and friends on Thursday, May 29 from 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Avink McCowen & Secord Funeral Home; 120 S. Woodhams St., Plainwell, MI 49080. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 at Hillside Cemetery in Plainwell.
