Dorothy Mildred (Dentler) Ward of Vicksburg, MI passed away on Tuesday, November 19, 2025, at the remarkable age of 96. Born on November 27, 1928, in Parkville, MI, she was the daughter of Ralph and Jessie (Dee) Dentler and one of eight children in a lively, close-knit family. From a young age, Dorothy developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors-a love that became a defining part of her life.
Dorothy was happiest with the sun on her shoulders or the crisp winter air on her face. Known around Kimble and Barton Lakes as "the lady in the blue snowmobile suit," she was a familiar and beloved figure on the ice, auger in hand, settling in for a day of fishing no matter how cold it was. She hunted deer, turkey, and squirrel with skill and patience, and she fished the local lakes year-round. Bass fishing, especially, brought her joy. After a long day of work, she would slip into her boat, head out onto the river, and bring home fresh bass for dinner-catching them, cleaning them, and cooking them with the same quiet pride she put into everything she did.
Above all, Dorothy was devoted to her family. She was a steady, loving mother and grandmother, always present, always encouraging, and always just a little feisty when the moment called for it. Her family affectionately remembers her as a wonderful mix of "sweet and spicy," a woman with a warm heart, a sharp wit, and a spirit that made her unforgettable.
Dorothy worked for thirty years at Family Foods in Portage, MI. Her friendly nature and work ethic endeared her to coworkers and customers alike, many of whom remained longtime friends. She had a way of making people feel welcomed, valued, and seen-one of the many quiet gifts that made her special.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth J. Ward; her parents; her daughter, Linda Barrone; grandchildren, Teddy Barrone and Benny Barrone; son-in-law, Ted Barrone; seven siblings; and several nieces and nephews.
She leaves behind a legacy of strength and love carried on by her son, Kenneth H. (Christine) Ward; her grandchildren, Kenny Ward, Missy (Steve) Cowgill, Brian Ward, Randy (Joy) Barrone, and Tammy Barrone; numerous great-grandchildren who adored her; and a dear family friend, Thomas (Sam) Munson, who held a special place in her heart.
