Ellen Louise Carper

Ellen Louise Carper, age 79, of Portage, Michigan, passed away at home on October 13, 2026, with her family by her side. She was born on March 11, 1947, in Three Rivers, Michigan, to Howard and Cora Fox.

Ellen graduated from Three Rivers High School. After getting married, she and her husband, Robert Carper, opened their home to foster children for several years. Later, Ellen began babysitting for families whose parents worked at Upjohn, continuing her love of caring for children and supporting families.

Ellen and Robert were married for 25 years. Although their marriage eventually ended in divorce, they remained very good friends, a relationship that continued to be an important part of their lives.

Above all, Ellen devoted herself to her family. Her world revolved around her children and grandchildren, and family was always important to her. She spent most of her life in the Portage area, with a five-year chapter in California, where she moved with her daughter, Trena, so Trena could work as a registered nurse while Ellen helped care for the children.

In her quieter moments, Ellen enjoyed reading until her eyesight made it difficult. She also enjoyed playing games on her phone, finding ways to stay entertained and enjoy her time.

Ellen will be remembered for the love she gave her family, the care she showed children throughout her life, and the lasting friendships she maintained along the way.

She is survived by her children, Trena Drenth and Eric Carper; her grandchildren, Amber Denton and Zack Drenth; and her five great-grandchildren, Nobyl, Chevy, Isabella, Wayne, and Jeffery. She is also survived by her two sisters, Sue and Carol, and her brother, Ken. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Ellen will be cremated, and her family plans to gather in Schoolcraft, Michigan, in the spring of 2027 to remember and honor her life.
