Evelyn Ruth (Rice) Rasmussen, age 83, of Decatur, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. She was born on March 2, 1943, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the daughter of Forrest and Marie (Pillars) Rice.
Evelyn was an avid reader who enjoyed books of all kinds. She also loved knitting, most recently making hats and gloves, and in earlier years she enjoyed creating sweaters for family and friends.
She attended Western Michigan University with plans to become a home economics teacher before shifting her career path. Evelyn went on to work as a paralegal until her retirement. She was an active member of the Legal Secretaries Association of Kalamazoo, where she also served in multiple leadership roles, including time on the board.
Faith and service were central in Evelyn's life. She was deeply involved with Community Baptist Church in Vicksburg, where she served as church secretary for more than 30 years.
Evelyn will be remembered for her generous heart and her willingness to help anyone in need. She gave quietly, consistently, and with great care for those around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry Rasmussen; and her sister, Betty Rice.
Left to cherish her memory are her son, Chas Vermeulen; grandchildren, Ruth Ann Vermeulen, Michael Vermeulen, and Keagan Baker-Vermeulen; great-grandchild, Anastasia Vermeulen; siblings, Susan (Randy) Clay, Michael (Laura) Rice, and Tom (Cappi) Rice; and her beloved "fur babies," Bear, Stitch, Lizzy, Zoey, and Boo.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
In accordance with the family's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at Community Baptist Church, 119 E Maple St, Vicksburg, Michigan, on a date yet to be determined.
Evelyn will be remembered for her steady faith, her quiet generosity, and the kindness she extended so freely to family, friends, and her church community.
