Gayle Allen Baker, age 86, of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away peacefully at home on May 28, 2025, with his devoted wife at his side.
Born to Ruby and Hiram Baker, Gayle was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. He graduated from Central High School, where he first showed signs of the curiosity, humor, and craftsmanship that would shape his life. He was married to Jacqueline Glidden, and together they had four children.
Later, Gayle found love again with Cheryl McDaniel. They recently celebrated 50 years of marriage—a testament to the strength of their bond, their shared spirit of adventure, and the enduring partnership they built over five decades.
Gayle spent his working years in sales, where his natural charisma, sharp mind, and easy smile made him a favorite among clients and colleagues. After retirement, he continued to give back to his community by working part time at Woods Lake Elementary, where he became a familiar and beloved presence to staff and students alike.
A lifelong learner and history enthusiast, Gayle had a special passion for early American history, particularly the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. This interest evolved into a deeply immersive hobby: he built muzzleloading rifles by hand and took part in historically accurate reenactments and encampments, often dressed in full period attire. These experiences were more than a pastime—they were a way for him to step back in time, connect with the past, and forge friendships with fellow enthusiasts.
Gayle’s love of history was matched only by his love of travel. He and Cheryl spent more than 20 years exploring the country by bus with fellow seniors, turning every trip into a new chapter in their journey together. They cruised to Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, and the Bahamas—collecting memories, stories, and the occasional souvenir. But their most thrilling adventure was a guided multi-day raft trip through the Grand Canyon in 1976—an unforgettable ride through nature’s majesty that they would recall with joy for decades.
Above all, Gayle was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; daughters Karina (Dan) Lopez and Stephanie (Bill) Turco; son Sean (Dave Usewick) Baker; grandchildren Errin (Jerry Olshansky) Lopez, Nick (Destinee Eaton) Lopez, and Makaelee Turco; and great-grandchildren Ryleigh and Lucian Lopez. His legacy lives on in the lives they lead, the values he instilled, and the stories they will continue to tell.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Tara, his parents, his brother Richard, and his sister Betty Welsh.
In accordance with Gayle’s wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Wings of Hope Hospice for the care, dignity, and compassion they provided in his final days.
