George Albert Johnson

George Albert Johnson September 1, 1951 - December 7, 2021 George A. Johnson, of Springport, passed away on Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the age of 70. He was born on September 1, 1951 to W. Everett and Astrid (Larsen) Johnson in Chicago, Illinois. He is survived by his sister, Gayle Anne (Johnson) Evans; his daughters and their spouses, Julie (Johnson) & Ryan Wilczak, Tamara (Stout) & Juan Bonifacio Martinez; grandchildren, Kelli (Fuller) Herbert, Cameron Fuller, Hailey Wilczak, Aubri Thorp, Katelynn Thorp, Chase Wilczak, Elianna Bonifacio Martinez, and Meylina Bonifacio Martinez; great grandchild Kevin Herbert. George is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Bill. George was a proud Veteran serving time in Würzburg, Germany in 1971. He was an active member at the local VFW and a very proud part of their Honor Guard and also a member of the American Legion. He worked for American Colloid Company in Albion, retiring after 40 years. George was an avid sports fan. He loved golf, baseball, football and was a diehard Michigan fan! He enjoyed attending high school sporting events and didn’t always agree with the referee. In retirement he enjoyed spending his time with good friends on the golf course, his bowling league, euchre night at the VFW, and the Fourth of July celebration with great food and the annual horseshoe tournament up north at Cruiser’s cabin, earning his name on the championship plaque for a couple of years. George was very outspoken, not afraid to say what was on his mind and loved sharing stories with friends and family. He was a talker, one that was hard to say goodbye to if you were on the phone with him. He was very well known and loved in the community. Most of all, he always looked forward to family get togethers during the holidays. George will be long remembered and forever missed. While at www.mccowensecord.com please take time to sign George’s guestbook, and/or share a memory with the family. Those who wish may make a contribution to the local VFW or American Legion. Per George’s wishes cremation has taken place and an Honor Guard Ceremony will be held at the Springport VFW; 230 Mechanic St., Springport, MI 49284 on December 17th at 3pm. Pastor Jacob Mead will be officiating. Immediately following the service we will celebrate George’s life with dinner at the VFW and share his great story. All are welcome to bring a passing dish.
