Gregory Freed

Rev. Gregory Alan Freed, age 72, peacefully went to be with his Savior on April 28, 2025. Born in Pasadena, California, on August 8, 1952, to Paul and Margaret Freed, Greg lived a life devoted to God, his family, and his calling.

A graduate of Point Loma Nazarene University in 1974, Greg went on to earn his Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary. He married the love of his life, Christine (Beer) Freed, in 1978. Together they served in ministry, ultimately finding their home at Elmdale Church of the Nazarene in Clarksville, MI, where he pastored for 24 years, retiring at Indian Lake Nazarene Camp, Vicksburg.

Greg was a man of deep compassion, humility, and steadfast faith. While pastoring at Elmdale, he also pursued a childhood dream of becoming a school bus driver-a role through which he extended his love for children and community beyond the church walls.

He and Christine built a warm, joyful home where their four children were raised in love, laughter, and vibrant faith. Greg made it a priority to involve his children in meaningful church activities, such as summer camps and Bible quizzing, cultivating in them a love for Christ and for community.

Greg had an adventurous spirit and a love of travel, achieving his goal of visiting all fifty states. He also had a heart that welcomed others-his home was always open to friends in need of comfort, encouragement, or simply a listening ear.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Eugene. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Christine Freed; their children: Janelle DeGraw (Matt), Timothy Freed (Elizabeth), Chelsea Kastanek (Abbot), and Nichole VanKalker (Josh); and grandchildren: Eliana & Elijah Freed; Alayna, Aiden, Regan, & Rilian Kastanek; and Jenny & Carolin VanKalker. He is also survived by his brothers, Bill and Ken Freed, along with many cherished nieces and nephews.

A verse close to Greg's heart was Psalm 100:4-"Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name." It is with that same spirit of praise and thanksgiving that his life will be celebrated.

In accordance with the family's wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Chapman Memorial Church of the Nazarene (ChapNaz), 7520 E U Ave, Vicksburg, MI 49097, with Pastor Ashley Robbins officiating.
