James Kenneth Johnson, age 54, of Plainwell, Michigan, passed away at home with his family on October 15, 2026. He was born on July 16, 1972, at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Illinois, to Kenneth B. Johnson and Beverly A. (Garver) Johnson.

James attended Evergreen Park Community Schools and later Moraine Valley Community College. During his school years, he was a member of the chess club, which went on to win a state championship. His love of chess continued throughout his life, and one of his greatest joys was teaching his son Kenneth how to play. In time, Kenneth became good enough to beat his dad, making for a special milestone in their relationship.

James married Wendy A. Johnson in their living room on March 3, 2012. His work as a truck driver for UPS and Schneider National Trucking took him to many places and ultimately made it possible for him to meet Wendy. Over the years, James called Evergreen Park, Illinois, Lowell, Indiana, and Plainwell, Michigan, home.

James had a talent for baking and a competitive streak to match. He even beat Wendy in a baking contest the two of them held. He was also known for telling the worst dad jokes, a talent he never seemed to run out of. He enjoyed television trivia and had an impressive knowledge of movies, including their actors and storylines. James also took pride in his sewing skills, which he was always happy to demonstrate to Wendy, who could not sew herself.

Some of James's favorite moments were the everyday adventures he shared with his family. He loved helping Wendy decorate for Halloween, playing with LEGOs alongside his son Kenneth and seeing what they could build together, and planning to create a model train setup with him. James also participated in a World War II reenactment group, an experience he greatly enjoyed.

James will be remembered for his many talents, his quick wit and dad jokes, and, above all, the time and love he gave to his family.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy Johnson; his sons, Tyler James and Kenneth Dale; and the memories they will carry with them. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth B. Johnson; his mother, Beverly A. Johnson; and his sister, Shirley Jean.

A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
