James Merle Longman, 93, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2025, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was born on November 28, 1932, in Climax, Michigan, to the late Merle James and Madge Arlene (Roe) Longman.
James graduated from Climax High School, where he met Charlene VanTichelt. They were married on October 7, 1951, and built a life centered around family and community.
He worked as a millwright for the Kellogg Company for 25 years, earning the respect of his colleagues through his craftsmanship and dedication. His last 5 years he advanced to the position of training all new millwrights. Beyond his professional life, James was deeply involved in his community. He contributed to the construction of several local buildings and the Climax-Scotts baseball field—lasting symbols of his volunteer spirit. His biggest contribution may have been his significant leadership in constructing the current Climax-Scotts football stadium, which brought together almost 100 volunteers from the community.
James is lovingly remembered by his children: Gary (Judy) Longman, Dan (Ricci) Longman, Jeff (Mary) Longman, and Brenda (Jim Escamilla) Longman. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren—Chad, Michael, Jason, Amy, Sarah, Darcy, Jackie, Jeanelle, Julia, Jacob, Jeremiah, Miranda, Jamie, Evan, Meredith, and Carter—22 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers William and Jerald Longman; and grandson Joshua Bishop.
An avid outdoorsman, James enjoyed fishing and hunting. A lifelong athlete and sports enthusiast, he played softball into his 80s and shared his passion through coaching. He also gave generously of his time to the Boy Scouts and local youth programs.
His faith guided him throughout life. He was proud to belong to the Climax Rotary Club, Climax Prairie Lodge #59, Battle Creek Shrine Club, Saladin Temple Shrine, and several other service organizations.
