Jane M Swanson

Listen to Obituary

Jane M (Medema) Swanson, also known as Jane M. Rooseboom, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, September 4, 2026, at the age of 93. She was born on November 16, 1932, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at the family home in Paterson, the third of six children born to Peter and Wilhelmina "Mina" (Tuin) Medema.

Jane was the first of four daughters, born after her two older brothers. She graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School and began her working career at Woolworths in downtown Kalamazoo. She later joined The Upjohn Company, where she worked as a Lab Specialist in the Infectious Diseases Department for 43 years before retiring.

Jane was united in marriage to Dick Swanson, and together they shared 34 years of marriage before his passing in 1992. Later in life, Jane met and married John Rooseboom. They shared more than 20 years of marriage before John passed away in March 2016.

Jane was a woman who found great joy in the simple things in life and, especially, in spending time with those she loved. She enjoyed going with the kids to Paw Paw for supper, especially when there were spaghetti deals at La Cantina. She loved taking drives around town simply to get out of the house and perhaps stop somewhere for an ice cream cone. She also enjoyed trips to Indiana with her sisters, as well as outings to Culver's, grocery shopping, and trips to Meijer. At home, Jane liked watching the news, following the political scene, and cheering for the Detroit Tigers.

Jane's faith was an important part of her life. She was a lifelong member of Second Christian Reformed Church, where she was very active and faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher for more than 20 years. She was also an avid supporter of Kalamazoo Christian Schools, reflecting her deep commitment to her faith and to Christian education.

Jane celebrated her 90th birthday surrounded by family at the Fieldstone Grill, creating a special memory that her family treasured. During the last two years of her life, Jane made her homes at Provision Living and StoryPoint, gradually coming to accept these places as home and finding comfort in the familiar faces around her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Wilhelmina Medema; her two older brothers, Herman and Wilbur; her first husband, Dick Swanson; her second husband, John Rooseboom; and many of her in-laws.

Left to cherish her loving memory are her children, David and Terry Swanson and Debbie and Stuart Smith; her grandchildren, Eric and Michelle Swanson and Monica and CJ Dodge; her great-grandchildren, Elias and Madilyn Swanson and Carter and Chloe Dodge; her three sisters, Harriet, Dorothy, and Margaret; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made in Jane's memory may be directed to the Kalamazoo Christian Schools Athletic Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.

In accordance with the family's wishes, public services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, September 10, 2026, with a time for visiting beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Fred DeYoung will officiate. Jane will be laid to rest with Dick at Hope Cemetery following the service.

We give God the glory.
