Jean Alban
Jean Alban passed away on Friday, April 10, 2026. Jean was born on July 24, 1946, to Henry and Jennie (van Slooten) Visscher. Jean had a lifelong love for the natural world and passed away leaving a legacy of growth—both in her gardens and in her family.
Jean’s life was defined by her ability to cultivate beauty and opportunity. For many years, she dedicated herself to her home and family, running a small daycare that provided a safe environment for children while she raised her own.
In 1984, Jean embarked on a new chapter, demonstrating a determination to further her education. While balancing her responsibilities, she attended evening classes at Davenport University, successfully earning her Bachelor of Science in Business. Her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there; she went on to achieve her Master’s in Business, a testament to her work ethic and drive. This academic foundation paved the way for a successful, multi-year career as a real estate agent, where she helped many others find their own sense of home.
Jean was perhaps happiest when she was outdoors. Known for her green thumb, she spent her summers creating vibrant landscaped yards.
In her later years, Jean sought the warmth of the sun year-round. After many seasons spent wintering in Florida, she eventually made the "Sunshine State" her permanent home, trading Michigan winters for the tropical landscapes she loved so much. She returned to Michigan in November 2021 to be closer to family.
Jean was preceded in death by her older sister, Ruth (Visscher) Reedyk. Her memory will be cherished by her surviving siblings: Don Visscher, Elie (Visscher) Herrygers, Paul Visscher, and John Visscher.
She also leaves behind a large and loving family: her children: Cherie (DeVries) Selles, Debbie (DeVries) Vandervest, and Lori DeVries; grandchildren: Joe Selles, Sam Selles, Trena Selles, Sarah Selles, Holly (Vandervest) Wise, Melanie Vandervest, Grace Vandervest, Saxon Vandervest, and Chase DeVries and Great-Grandchild: Moses Selles.
Jean will be remembered for the flowers she planted, the careers she built, and the family she so loved. Her journey from the daycare room to the master’s podium, and finally to the Florida coast, remains an inspiration to all who knew her.
