Karen Sue Otten, age 83, of Kalamazoo, Michigan passed away September 8, 2026.
She was born on November 14, 1942, in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Walter and Opel (Sackett) Sylvester.
Karen will be remembered as a beloved wife, mom, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She married the love of her life, Ray, in 1985. They share thirty years of marriage and built a life filled with joy, laughter, family, and countless cherished memories.
Karen graduated from Lakeview High School in 1960. After graduation she worked as an insurance underwriter for boats, motorcycles and lakefront property. In September of 1961 she welcomed her first son James into her family. The family grew with the addition of two daughters, Judy and Patti.
Crocheting and the Detroit Tigers filled most of her time. She loved to watch the Tigers. They were the only team and the only sport she watched. In her younger days she enjoyed bowling and was on leagues for many years.
Karen is survived by her children: James (Ellisa) Hayes, Judy (Howard) Stull, Patti (Gary) Haaksma; 10 grandchildren, several great grandchildren and even one great great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Pat West and sister-in-law Patty Sylvester.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray and her brother Jack Sylverster.
In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be held on her birthday, November 14, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Main Street Pub; 7509 S. Westnedge Ave., Portage, Michigan 49002. Since Karen loved the Tiger’s please wear your Tiger colors or apparel.
