Kathryn Rose Horton, of Vicksburg, passed away on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the age of 72. She was born on September 4, 1953, in Brownsville, TX. Kathy was the daughter of William and Vera (Oakley) Royal. She embraced life with a rare combination of creativity, independence, and strength that deeply touched all who knew her.
Kathryn graduated from Vicksburg High School with the Class of 1971. Not long after, she began a dedicated career with the United States Postal Service, working for over 30 years and ultimately serving as postmaster for both Leonidas and Schoolcraft. Her leadership, attention to detail, and commitment to her colleagues left a lasting impression throughout the communities she served.
Kathryn’s role as mother and grandmother were, by her own measure, her greatest achievement. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest joy and purpose. Family was at the center of everything she did. Her warmth, wisdom, and nurturing spirit brought comfort, encouragement, and unconditional love to all who knew her.
It was during her time working at the post office that fate stepped in. While attending a training session, she met Don Horton, the love of her life. The two were married on October 9, 1988, beginning a beautiful chapter filled with love and partnership.
Kathryn was a woman of remarkable creativity and many talents. She found great joy in painting, sculptural art, cooking, and tending to her beloved home garden, which she often called her favorite place on earth. She was also a formidable Scrabble player, affectionately earning the title of “Scrabble Shark.”
To her grandchildren, she will always be remembered as “Grandma Bird,” a name that carries with it countless cherished memories. Kathryn also looked forward to her annual trips with her sisters, whose lifelong bond brought her immeasurable happiness. She found peace and contentment in the mountains of North Carolina and Edisto Island in South Carolina, where she and Don spent many years enjoying their property and creating treasured memories with the family.
Those who knew Kathryn will remember her as fiercely independent, endlessly creative, strong-willed, capable, exceptionally stylish, and a gifted negotiator. She had an unmatched ability to stretch a dollar and believed in making the most of what she had, yet she was always generous with her love, kindness, and time.
Kathryn leaves behind a legacy of strength, resilience, creativity, and unwavering devotion to her family. Though she will be profoundly missed, her spirit will live on in the hearts of those who loved her and in the countless lives she touched through her compassion, humor, and enduring love.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Donald; six children: Preston (Tamra) Patnoude, of SC; Jason (Traci) Patnoude, of Vicksburg; Daron (Tracy) Patnoude, of Mendon; Matthew Horton, of TN; Adam (Mai) Horton, of TX; and Jesscia (Gabe) Lay, of WA; 16 grandchildren: Brendon, Mason, Eva, Ethan, Brendan, Zoe, Natalie, Jacob, Garrett, Gaige, Damian, Shane, Klairissa, Anthony, Isabella, Rachel, and Alexander; three great grandchildren: Dean, Weston, and Ryker.
She is also survived by her eight siblings: Dave Royal, of MO; Steve Royal, of Vicksburg; Chris (Dave) Getchel, of Kalamazoo; Julie (Scott) Ferris, of Vicksburg; Mark Royal, of MO; Elaine (Jake) VanTichelt, of Kalamazoo; Vickie Middaugh, of Vicksburg; and Amy (Mark) Meisel, of Ludington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents: William and Vera Royal; grandson: Alexander Lay; and three siblings: Diane King, Dennis Royal, and Don Royal.
