Marilyn Kay Brainerd, a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on May 30, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on October 5, 1940, Marilyn's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, joy, and cherished memories.
A graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School with the Class of 1958. Marilyn's journey took her to General Motors, where she dedicated over 35 years of her life to clerical work. It was within those walls that she met Howard Brainerd. Howard, an engineer at General Motors, was drawn to Marilyn's infectious joyful spirit and radiant smile—a connection that blossomed into a deep and enduring love.
Marilyn enjoyed a fulfilling life enriched by her passions and hobbies. She had a particular affinity for playing cards, often gathering with friends and family to enjoy spirited games of euchre and bridge. Her hands were also gifted; she loved to sew and engage in various crafts, creating meaningful pieces that reflected her creativity and thoughtfulness.
Marilyn’s faith was a quiet but constant presence in her life. She found comfort and joy in worship and was a committed member of her church community. She gave her time in many thoughtful ways, helping in the church office and welcoming others with kindness and care.
Marilyn also enjoyed being in her kitchen. She would try out new recipes and, when finding one she liked, she'd add it to her collection of favorites. These were of course meticulously organized.
Winter months saw Howard and Marilyn basking in the warmth of Lake Placid, Florida, where they enjoyed a life on the water. Throughout her life, Marilyn was known for her welcoming nature and her ability to create an atmosphere filled with joy and laughter, making everyone feel at home.
Above all, Marilyn's heart belonged to her family, whom she loved dearly. Her grandchildren were particularly precious to her, and her warmth and devotion will always be remembered as a guiding light in their lives.
