Marilyn Willis

September 1, 1932 — December 1, 2023

Kalamazoo

Marilyn Joyce (Lamphere) Willis, a beloved resident of Kalamazoo, MI, passed away on December 1st, 2023, at the age of 91. Her life began in Cadillac, Michigan, on September 1st, 1932, as the daughter of Roy and Stella (Burst) Lamphere.

After graduating from Cadillac High School in 1950, Marilyn embarked on a journey of enduring love when she married her high school sweetheart, Gordon Dale Willis, on February 17th, 1951. Their unwavering bond stood strong for an incredible 72 years, a testament to the depth of their commitment and love.

Marilyn began her professional journey as a teller at Cadillac State Bank until early 1955. In 1956, she and Gordon made their home in Kalamazoo, where Marilyn devoted herself to nurturing her family as a dedicated stay-at-home mom. In 1967, alongside Gordon, she became the proud owner of the Vicksburg Locker plant, pouring her dedication into the business until her retirement in 1994.

A pillar of her community, Marilyn was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo for 67 years. Her involvement extended into various groups, including her over 50year membership in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority, participation in the Red Hat Ladies, and her contributions to the Portage Senior Center through her involvement with the Needlers group.

Her passion for knitting extended beyond personal enjoyment; Marilyn knitted baby hats for newborns, sharing her warmth and care with those at Borgess Hospital. Her leisure time was filled with pleasures like reading, knitting, word searches, and puzzles, as well as watching game shows and supporting her favorite basketball team. Go Pistons!

Marilyn's impact stretched far beyond her immediate circle. She was cherished deeply by her family, friends, and the community she embraced with her kindness and warmth. She leaves behind her loving husband, Gordon, and their children: Randy (Karen) Willis, David (Kathy) Willis, and Debbie (Paul) Guy. Marilyn's legacy continues through her eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and one beloved grand-dogger, Jasmine. Marilyn's memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her, with a legacy of love and compassion enduring through the generations.
