Nicholas Mena

Nicholas “Nick” Mena, 43, of Allegan, MI, passed from this life on August 5, 2024, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.

Nicholas, most fondly known as “Nick”, was born August 12, 1980, in Plainwell, MI to Mark Nutter and Yolanda Mena, was of the Catholic faith, and was a graduate of Martin Hich School, home of the mighty Clippers. He had been a superfan of Michigan State University and had received a get-well card signed by all the football team players which meant the world to him. He had been employed as a manager for many years at Wendy’s before he had succumbed to his debilitating disease, MS.

Nick was a truly blessed man, but those who had the privilege of knowing him were even more blessed. His infectious laughter and unwavering ability to bring smiles to the faces of everyone around him made him the heart of every gathering. No matter the time or place, Nick was always at the center of joy, ensuring that no one was left without a lighter heart.

To describe how amazing Nick was is a task that words will never fully accomplish. A quote that comes to mind, and one that has provided comfort, is this:

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen nor touched but are felt in the heart.”

This is how Nick will forever be remembered and deeply felt in the hearts of all who loved him.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents, Rueben and Maria Mena; stepfather, Domingo Torres; brothers, Micky and Marcos Torres.

Survivors include his beloved daughter, Lexi Mena; son, Spencer Tompsett; brother and sister-in-law, Manuel “Manny” and Brandy Torres; niece, Mckaylya-Hope VanBeek and husband, Austin; cherished aunt and uncle, Rose and John Visscher; numerous other family and friends.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 8th, from 4pm - 7pm, with music and gathering starting at 5pm at the Avink, McCowen & Secord Funeral Home, 120 S. Woodhams Street, Plainwell, MI.

A Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 2:30pm at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, 766 S. Farmer St., Otsego, MI 49078 with Father Simon Manjooran, Celebrant. A burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery, 6942 Lindsey Road, Orangeville, MI.

Pallbearers will be Austin VanBeek, Luke Syers, Marco Moreno, Spencer Tompsett, Todd Sturgis, and Wojtek Dabrowski.

Nicholas will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit, laughter, and love will live on in our hearts forever.

Nick’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to all those that gave care and love to him throughout his long battle with MS. To those that wish, please consider making a memorial donation to the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, www.mymsaa.org/donate.
