Nikki Ray (Macioroski) Sisson, age 79, of Portage, Michigan, peacefully passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2026. She was born on December 23, 1946, in Billings, Montana, the daughter of Chet and Mamie (Jonas) Macioroski.
Nikki was a woman of determination, curiosity, and intellect. She moved from Billings to Leavenworth, Kansas, to attend the University of Saint Mary, becoming only the second person in her family to attend college. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in Chemistry and a minor in Philosophy before relocating to Kalamazoo to begin her career with Upjohn Pharmaceuticals. She continued her career as the company transitioned to Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, retiring in 2001 so she could devote more time to the people she loved most-her grandchildren.
When Nikki moved to Kalamazoo, she met Walker Sisson. The two quickly formed a lasting bond and were united in marriage on April 13, 1971. Together they welcomed two daughters, Jenny and Andrea. Although they later separated, Nikki and Walker remained close throughout the rest of their lives. Together, they instilled in their daughters a lifelong love of learning and the value of hard work.
Nikki's greatest joy was being a grandmother. Her grandchildren will forever treasure the memories they made together-her famous "Aggression Cookies," made without eggs so they could safely enjoy the cookie dough, building forts beneath the kitchen table, climbing and playing on her stationary bike, turning couch cushions into jumping pads while music played from her record player, blowing bubbles in the yard, and searching for toads around her home. She had a remarkable gift for making ordinary moments feel magical.
She also left an enduring example for her daughters of what it meant to be a strong, intelligent, and independent woman. Her resilience, compassion, and unwavering support shaped their lives in countless ways.
Nikki had a lifelong love of gardening and surrounded herself with plants both indoors and out. Some of her most treasured plants had been transplanted from her parents' home in Montana, allowing her to carry a piece of home with her wherever she lived. She was also an avid reader with a particular love for science fiction, especially the works of Isaac Asimov.
Her Catholic faith was an important part of her life. Nikki was a longtime parishioner of St. Augustine Cathedral in Kalamazoo, where she faithfully volunteered at the rectory and found joy in serving her church community.
Those who knew Nikki will remember her for her kindness, optimism, and unwaveringly positive attitude. Even during difficult times, she chose to encourage those around her, leaving a lasting impression on fellow residents and the staff at her nursing home through her warmth and gracious spirit.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Mamie Macioroski; her sister, Sonia Hoffman; and her former husband, Walker Sisson.
Left to cherish her loving memory are her daughters, Jenny Sisson and Andrea Sisson; her grandchildren, Emma, Andrew, and Elijah; her sister, Shannon Macioroski; and many extended family members and dear friends.
In accordance with the family's wishes, cremation has taken place. Nikki will be laid to rest with her family in Montana on a date yet to be determined.
Nikki will be remembered for her brilliant mind, her unwavering love for her family, her joyful spirit, and the countless memories she created through a life filled with kindness, curiosity, and love.
