Patrick Anthony Spruit

Patrick A. Spruit, of Portage, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at the age of 81. Patrick will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, faith, and devotion to his family.

He was the youngest of twelve children born to Peter and Louise Spruit in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Patrick graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Stationed in Washington, D.C., Patrick served as a Staff Car Driver, providing transportation for Military Officers and Congressmen to the Pentagon and Capitol Hill. After returning home from the Army, Patrick began his career as a plumbing apprentice and eventually became a Master Plumber. From 1978-1993, he served as a Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector for the City of Portage. He was a longtime member of St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church. He married his wife, Mary and together they had three daughters, Anne, Kathryn and Sarah, and shared more than 53 years of marriage.

He is preceded in death by his parents: Peter and Louise Spruit; and siblings: Joseph, Raymond, William, Frank, Thersea, and Thomas. He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Mary; three daughters: Anne (Garth) Fuess, of Northfield, Massachusetts; Kathryn (Rory) McGoff, of Manchester, Michigan; and Sarah Spruit, of Reed City, Michigan; and ten grandchildren: Jacob, Leah, Noah, Nathaniel, Laura, Patrick, Mary, Anna, Izaiah and Elijah. He is also survived by his siblings: Donald (Sandy) Spruit, Robert (Marcia) Spruit, Bernard Spruit, Dorothy Visner, and Mary Spruit, all of the Grand Rapids area; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 11am at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church in Portage, MI. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the mass at the church beginning at 10am. There will be a rosary at the church prior to the service at 10:30am. Patrick will be interred at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11am.
