Richard T. “Dick” Nowling, died at his home in Plainwell, Michigan on January 22, 2026. Dick was born on July 29, 1933, in Bloomfield, Indiana, to Alfred and Wilhelmina Nowling. The family moved to Dayton, Ohio when Dick was a child. Dick excelled as a football player at Wilbur Wright High School and received a scholarship to DePauw University that would change his life. After graduation from DePauw, Dick worked for the Ford Motor Company and Burroughs Manufacturing before joining the Upjohn Company in finance and accounting. Dick traveled the world on behalf of Upjohn before retiring in 1992.

Dick is survived by his loving wife Patricia, his children Jennifer (Angelo) Grossi and Scott (Dana) and four grandchildren: Alexis, Hannah, Angelo, and Michael. Dick was blessed to love and be loved by Pat and his stepdaughters Judy (Stuart) Keel, Pam (Spencer) Batten, and Cindy (Paul) Kosloski, and his bonus grandchildren, Matthew Keel, Luke Batten, and Hayley (Zach) Porritt. Dick was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Bill and Jack, and his ex-wife Carol.

Dick was an avid golfer and a fixture at the Lake Doster Golf Club beginning in the late 1960s. He cherished the friendships he made there and wrote a book about the club and the characters that passed through there. Dick loved reading, writing letters, and sharing his thoughts. He loved his wife. He was proud of his whole family. He loved his many adventures over his time with us. And he was just so, so nice. He was lovely.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held in the spring, Dick’s favorite time of year. If you would like to honor him in the meantime, strike up a conversation with a stranger and enjoy it.
