Robert "Bob" Preston Harper, a beloved member of the Vicksburg community, passed away on, Monday, December 11, 2023 at the age of 86. He was born on December 6, 1937, in his hometown of Vicksburg to his parents Harold and Mabelle (Cilley) Harper.

Bob's journey through life was marked by profound dedication to his pursuits and a warm-hearted personality that touched the lives of those around him. After graduating from Vicksburg High School, he went on to further his education at Michigan State University, earning his Bachelor's degree. Bob's true passion lay close to home as he returned to the family farm after college.

At the Harper family farm, pigs and maintain the fields, were their primary focus. Bob dedicated himself wholeheartedly to maintaining its success.  Even after retiring from farming, he found joy in different vocations. Bob became a substitute teacher and later worked part-time for the Rupert-Durham Funeral Home which eventually became the Avink, McCowen and Secord Funeral Home. His experiences working with families during their most difficult times exemplified his empathy and unwavering support for his community.

Bob's loving nature extended well beyond his professional life – it permeated every aspect of his life. Known for his quick wit and calming demeanor, he had a gift for making people laugh when they needed it most. Bob possessed a remarkable ability to provide heartfelt advice that resonated with those who sought solace in his wisdom.

While Bob's work brought him fulfillment, it was in spending time on his cherished family farm and with his loved ones where he truly felt at home. He took immense pride in his children and grandchildren, cherishing every moment shared together. Family gatherings were filled with warmth and laughter as Bob reveled in the joyous connections that bound them all together.

Among Bob's proudest accomplishments was being married to his wife Nancy (Beadling) for over 63 years. Their enduring love and partnership served as an inspiration to all those who knew them. Bob was also an active member of the Vicksburg United Methodist Church, where he once held the role of church committee chairperson.

Bob's commitment to his community was evident through his involvement in various organizations and roles. His desire to develop the young people in the community encouraged him to become a member of the Vicksburg School Board where he served for several years.  He served as a member of the Brady Township Board of Review. Additionally, Bob was a Little League coach and worked with 4H, fostering growth and development among the youth he mentored.

In recognition of his contributions, Bob was appointed as a State Officer for both the Michigan Swine Producers and Michigan Pork Producers, displaying his deep commitment to the agricultural community. Furthermore, he joined the Vicksburg Rotary Club in 1966, eventually ascending to Club President. It was through this esteemed organization that Bob was honored with the distinction of being selected for the Paul Harris Fellow award. For over 40 years he volunteered his time in the Rotary Showboat. He enjoyed playing a funny man in various skits.

Bob's memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to share in his life's journey. His legacy of love, compassion, and unwavering dedication will continue to inspire all who knew him. As we bid our farewell to this remarkable man, let us celebrate his life and hold dear the treasured memories he wove into our lives.

Bob is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nancy; four children: Jeff (Alicia) Harper, of East Leroy; Doug (Jen) Harper, of IL; Leigh Ann (Scott) Huller, of Oxford; Steve (Chihiro) Harper, of Grand Rapids; 10 grandchildren: Zach Harper, Dillon Harper, Logan Harper, Gibson Harper, Aidan Harper, Ethan Bond, Georgia Bond, Elloitt Bond, Sam Huller and Luke Huller; and one great grandchild, Radley. He is also survived by his sister: Elizabeth (Jack) Page and sister-in-law: Linda Riggs, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at 12noon at the Vicksburg United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends at the church from 11am until noon.
