Jim Hauke went to be with the love of his life, Esther, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a brief stay in the hospital.

Jim was a man who lived life to the fullest. He was always the life of the party, bringing laughter, warmth, and joy wherever he went. He cherished his independence and remained fully independent right up to the end, living life on his own terms.

Above all, Jim's greatest love was Esther. Their love story began when a young Esther met Jim at the local grocery store, where he worked as a meat cutter. Jim was serving in the Navy and stationed nearby, and from that first introduction, a romance blossomed. When his time in the service was fulfilled, Jim returned home to Bangor, Michigan, but his love for Esther remained strong.

As their love deepened, they decided to make it official and were married on April 2, 1959. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, hard work, and countless memories. Their marriage lasted more than 51 years, until Esther passed away on July 5, 2010.

The couple settled into married life with Jim working as a truck driver while Esther kept things running on the home front. They were blessed with three children: Ron, Allison, and Guy. In 1971, Jim and Esther settled their family in Schoolcraft, where they continued to build their life together.

Nothing could have pleased Jim more than becoming a grandfather. His eight grandchildren-Cameron, MacKenzie, Madison, Montana, Omar, Gabriella, Lennon and James-brought him tremendous joy and pride. He treasured his grandchildren and the memories they made together.

Jim's devotion to Esther never wavered, even when her health began to decline. When Esther moved into a nursing home, Jim visited her twice every day to sit with her, talk with her, and simply be by her side. His love and commitment to her continued even after her passing. Jim would visit Esther at the cemetery, sit beside her, talk with her, and enjoy his morning coffee. It was a quiet tradition that spoke volumes about the depth of his love for her.

Jim also had a great passion for gardening and cultivated some massive gardens over the years. He especially enjoyed growing pumpkins for the children at the school and helping supply pumpkins for his neighbors' pumpkin barn. He also teamed up with his neighbor to help sell sweet corn. Jim loved working the soil, watching things grow, and sharing what he had grown with others.

Jim remained active and independent right up to the end. He loved getting out and spending time with his many friends. He especially enjoyed lunches with his sister and brother and looked forward to the time they spent together. Jim had many different circles of friends, and each one loved him to pieces. He had a way of making people laugh, feel welcome, and enjoy the moment.

Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His laughter, stories, generosity, independence, and zest for life will remain in the hearts of those who loved him.

In keeping with Jim's wishes, he did not want a funeral service. His family will honor his wishes with a private burial ceremony.

Jim's earthly journey may have come to an end, but his love story with Esther continues. After 16 years apart, he is finally reunited with the love of his life.
