Ronald James Pillars, 76, of Kalamazoo, passed away suddenly at home on May 28, 2026.

Ron was born on August 14, 1949, to Donald and Marian (Hackman) Pillars. He was known for his love for the outdoors. He never met a person he couldn’t talk to. He knew someone everywhere that he went. He was a hard worker with attention to detail. He was always willing to help friends and family with projects. He was truly “one of a kind”.

With a love for anything outdoors, Ron was an avid fisherman, hunter, gardener and camper. He also played softball and golf.

Ron grew up in Portage, Michigan and graduated from Portage Northern High School in 1967. During high school, he played baseball, was on the gymnastics team and was in theater. After high school, he worked for his father for a time along with some other work experiences that led him to an opportunity to train in his long-time career in the construction field. He worked many of those years with AVB until his retirement.

Growing up, Ron had a neighbor named Linda. They attended the same Kindergarten class and grew up together. During their senior year, the neighbors became high school sweethearts. They were married on February 1, 1969, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo.

Above all else, Ron was devoted to his family and friends and to living life to its fullest. He cared deeply about bringing family together and creating moments where the people he loved could laugh and enjoy each other’s company.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Sharon Ferry.

Left to carry his memory are his wife of 57 years, Linda; his children: Robert James Pillars and Carrie Lynn (Jerry) Bailey; five grandchildren: Chloe Gerhard (27), Jake Gerhard (25), Lauren Pillars (24), Caitlyn Gerhard (23) and Andrew Pillars (20). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews as well as many close friends.

Following his wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial gathering is being planned for a later date.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
