Susan Marie Sayles

Wednesday morning, January 19th, 2022, Susan Marie Sayles passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her home in Kalamazoo, surrounded by her family, after a brave fight with stroke complications from the last few years.

Susan is survived by her husband of 39 years, Andrew Sayles, her triplets, Aaron, Nicole, and Ashley Sayles, her father, Laddie Quick, her 4 siblings, Jacqueline Shirey, Larry (Linda) Quick, Dan (Jean) Quick, and Cheryl (Tim) Wilks, her brother-in-laws, David (Barbara) Sayles, Myron Sayles, and many extended family members. She was preceded in passing by her mother, Teressa Quick, her father and mother-in-law, Myron and Lucille Sayles, and her brother-in-law David Shirey.

Susan Marie Sayles was born to Laddie Quick and Teressa Quick on August 7th, 1953, the eldest of her 4 siblings. After graduating highschool from Portage Central in 1971, she pursued her Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Western Michigan University and her CPA certificate. She was a proud member of Kappa Phi. For the majority of her career, she worked at the Kalamazoo County Circuit Court as the Finance Administrator. On May, 29th, 1982, she married her dear husband, Andy, despite their different styles of playing Euchre. Together, Susan and Andy traveled (one of her most favorite trips was to Africa), were part of the KWings Club, housed traveling hockey boys, and rescued dogs. On January 16th, 1997, Susan and Andy welcomed triplets into their lives. Susan was an absolutely wonderful mother, who always put her children's wishes and needs ahead of her own in the most selfless way. Whether it was making clothes and quilts for them when they were younger (Susan loved to sew, quilt, and crochet) or by attending their activities and sporting events when they got older. Her children are eternally grateful to have had Susan as their mother; they could not have asked for a better mom.

First and foremost, Susan was known by everyone for her infectious smile and gentle warmth that she brought to those who surrounded her. In many ways, she was observant, and when she would extend herself into the conversation, she often did so with sly remarks and laughter. Her presence itself was that of unspoken comfort, reassurance, and love. Her resiliency, shown particularly in the last few years of her life, is not something that will be forgotten.

Susan’s Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, January 29th from 12:00pm - 2:00pm at the Fetzer Center on Western Michigan University’s campus. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity that supports animals or wildlife.
