Tom Hawkes, 77, of Kalamazoo passed away on June 13, 2025, at Rose Arbor Hospice. He was born August 17, 1947, in Richwood, West Virgina to William and Edna (nee Bragg) Hawkes. In 1965, he graduated from South Haven High School where he excelled at football and baseball, setting school records in baseball. After graduation, Tom served in the United States Air Force where he continued his football and baseball career. Following military service, Tom made a living in footwear and auto sales. He owned Cork Lane Bootery and an Airstep Shoe store. Later, he worked at Okun Brothers Shoes, DeNooyer Chevrolet, and Midway Chevrolet.
Tom is survived by his wife Charlene (nee Bernier); three daughters, Erin (Keith) Banchoff of Byron Center, Sarah (Jesse) Hawkes of Kalamazoo, and Kristina (Peter) Smith of Arizona; and six grandchildren, Micah, Aidan, Jacob, Aubrey, Noah, and Madison. He is also survived by his siblings Mike (Linda) Hawkes of Colorado and Twila (Phil) Calder of Utah. Tom was preceded in death by his parents and brothers James (Jim) Hawkes and Edwin (Kim) Mihalik.
Tom had a heart for the hungry, homeless, and hurting. He was a member of Radiant Church where he served as a greeter and fostered fellowship with his bible study group. Tom enjoyed Michigan sports and DiMaggio’s “Special” pizza. He found peace along the Lake Michigan shore.
Tom’s resilience navigating his lengthy illness is inspiring. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the many health care professionals that cared for Tom, especially Dr. Satvik Jhamb and the exceptionally kind and caring staff at Rose Arbor Hospice.
A memorial service celebrating Tom’s life will be held at Radiant Church (8157 E De Avenue, Richland) on Tuesday, June 24, 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the South Haven High School Athletic Boosters, with a designation for the baseball team, to honor the role sports played in Tom’s formative years.
